5 Popular Car Maintenance Myths

There are many popular myths about cars out there, from what increases power and performance to how to get the best gas mileage and a lot more. Today, we’re going to examine some popular car maintenance myths. What is the truth about auto repair vs the myths? Let’s take a look.

  1. The 3,000 mile oil change – There are a lot of folks out there that still think that they need to get that oil changed every 3,000 miles. In fact, most only require oil changes from 5-10,000 miles. This can save a lot of money in the long run if you can end up cutting your oil changes in half. Make sure to check your owner’s guide to find the recommended mileage.

  2. Overmaintenance is just as bad as undermaintenance – Car maintenance is essential. There is nothing worse than ignoring those little lights on your dashboard. You need to make sure that you head into your local auto shop right away and get the right repair advice. There can be such a thing as worrying too much about maintenance, but there is no truth to the fact that maintaining your vehicle according to your manufacturer’s specifications is overkill.

  3. You should replace your air filter every time you get an oil change – This piece of repair advice is overkill as well. There are a variety of filters on your vehicle and all of them, including the air filter, will get dirty or worn out and require replacement, but it’s not necessary to replace your air filter every time you get your oil changed.

  4. You have to get maintenance done at your dealership or your warranty will be voided – This is another common myth. You need to get that maintenance done, but you don’t necessarily have to go to your dealership for the auto repair or repair advice. In fact, many times local auto repair shops are more affordable and offer equivalent (if not superior) service.

  5. The dealership offers a superior level of auto repair service than an independent auto shop – This myth has been debunked many times. In fact, more people trust independent auto shops over dealerships and they have proven to be more affordable as well.
