Spring Car Maintenance: What Should You Check?

Spring is almost here, which means that it is finally warm enough to spend time outside without freezing to death or being bundled up like a grizzly bear. Yeah, we know, the winter was actually pretty mild, but still. So, now that it’s warming up it is a good time to make sure that your car is caught up on all of the routine maintenance that needs to be done. If you’ve been neglecting that oil change or another piece of routine maintenance, you should come clean and either get your hands dirty, or come in to your local auto shop to take advantage of the professional car maintenance service.

What should you check this spring? Well, first up is that one piece of routine maintenance that everyone is familiar with: the oil change. If you neglect your oil changes, your vehicle’s engine will not be running as easily as it could be and it will suffer more wear and tear because of it. So, make sure that you get your regular oil change done. If you do it yourself, make sure you consult the owner’s manual of your vehicle so that you use the correct type of engine oil, and so that you know the proper interval for getting your oil changed.

Make sure not to neglect spring car maintenance service.

Another important thing to check in the spring is the air filter on your vehicle. In order for an internal combustion engine (that’s the type of engine in your car) to run, it needs a source of clean air to aid in the combustion. If your air filter is clogged or too old, it should be replaced. You will notice an improvement in engine power and fuel economy when you do replace your old filter. Replacing an air filter is relatively simply, but if you’re not the DIY type, go ahead and bring your car into the local auto shop. Many shops provide a tune-up or car maintenance service which includes changing the oil, air filter, checking the tires, other fluids and any number of other important facets that determine the overall health of your vehicle.

For your spring check-up, you’ll also want to make sure that all of your fluids are clean and topped off. This includes windshield wiper fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid and antifreeze. Also, make sure that your tires have good tread on them and look for signs of uneven wear that could indicate an issue with your suspension or alignment. If you do spot uneven wear on your tires, bring your car into your local auto shop so that a trusted auto technician can take a look and fix you up.
